sRGB vs CMYK for Etsy Print Files

Most Etsy print-on-demand partners want sRGB JPEGs. CMYK is for certain local offset jobs. Sending the wrong profile makes greens dull or reds glow.

Direct answer

For most Etsy print-on-demand paper SKUs, export sRGB JPEG at 300 DPI. Use CMYK only when a local offset or packaging printer specifies a CMYK profile (and which one). Adobe RGB and Display P3 files often look dull or neon after a shop assumes sRGB. Convert before you upload, then crop and resize.

Color space is not DPI, but it gets blamed as “the print looks different from my screen.” Phones are wide-gamut. Cheap POD is sRGB in, CMYK inks out, with their conversion. You cannot fully control the press. You can stop feeding it the wrong profile.

If the template is silent, sRGB is the default. If the template names Coated FOGRA39, believe the template.

What each space is for

sRGB: web, phones, almost all POD. CMYK: ink on paper in a color-managed print shop. Adobe RGB: some photo archives; convert to sRGB for Etsy unless the press is set up for it. Display P3: iPhones; convert to sRGB for production.

Convert, then crop

Convert the original to sRGB in a color-managed app if it is P3 or Adobe RGB, then crop and export 300 DPI. Converting a tiny Instagram file will not restore greens.

Reopic targets POD-style sRGB exports. A CMYK offset job still needs the shop’s conversion rules.

Soft proofing without a lab

Order one 8×10 of a colorful piece before you list 12 sizes. Screens are backlit. Paper is not. Neon illustration is the usual surprise, not 300 DPI math.

If reds clip, pull saturation slightly in the original, not by switching to CMYK in Photoshop and guessing a profile.

File type still matters

JPG vs PNG vs WebP: photographs as high-quality JPG in sRGB. Type-heavy graphics as PNG, still tagged sRGB unless asked otherwise. DPI and profile are separate stamps.

FAQ: sRGB vs CMYK Etsy prints

Should I convert Etsy prints to CMYK?+

Not for most POD. They want sRGB and convert to their inks. Use CMYK only when a local press names a profile.

Why is my print duller than my iPhone?+

iPhones are often Display P3 and backlit. Paper is sRGB-ish and reflected light. Convert to sRGB and expect a slightly quieter print.

Does 300 DPI include the color profile?+

No. DPI is pixels per inch. Profile is how those pixels map to color. You need both correct.

Is Adobe RGB better for print?+

Only in a workflow that keeps Adobe RGB to the press. Random POD will treat it as sRGB and shift color.
