Etsy Print File Requirements: What Print Shops Actually Need

Etsy does not print the file — your partner does. Give them enough pixels, 300 DPI metadata, the right ratio, sRGB, and a color profile they accept. Listing photos can be smaller.

Direct answer

Etsy print file requirements are set by the print partner, not by Etsy’s listing image rules. Production files usually need 300 DPI at the SKU’s physical size, the correct aspect ratio, sRGB, and JPG or PNG as specified. Listing photos can be 2000–3000 pixels. Do not upload a mockup as the print file. Ask the shop for bleed, max megapixels, and color space before you export.

Sellers search “Etsy print file requirements” expecting one official pixel chart. Etsy hosts the marketplace. Printful, Gooten, Prodigi, Printify, or your local press hosts the paper. Each publishes different templates. The overlapping truth is: enough pixels, right rectangle, tagged 300 DPI, format the RIP accepts.

Treat this as a preflight, then confirm against the SKU PDF. When in doubt, the partner’s pixel box wins over a generic 8×10 table.

Marketplace vs printer

Etsy listing images are marketing. They can be cropped for mobile, lightly sharpened, even mocked up in a frame. The production file is a flat, full-bleed (or template-exact) image at print pixels. Mixing them is how a 1080p lifestyle photo becomes a poster.

If you fulfill yourself, you are the printer. You still need 300 DPI files in labeled folders so a VA or a future you can find 8×10 vs 12×18 without opening Photoshop.

The spec sheet almost every paper SKU shares

300 DPI (or the template’s PPI). Dimensions matching the trim size, plus bleed if requested. sRGB JPEG at high quality, or PNG for graphics. No watermarks, no mockup furniture, no decorative borders unless they are part of the art.

Color: most POD is sRGB. Sending Adobe RGB or Display P3 without converting can shift greens. CMYK is for certain local offset jobs — do not CMYK a Printful poster unless they ask.

Digital downloads vs physical prints

If you sell a digital file on Etsy, buyers print at home. State the maximum inches at 300 DPI in the listing (pixel width ÷ 300). A 3600-pixel file is a 12-inch-wide print, not a 24-inch poster.

Physical print listings should not attach a tiny personal-use JPEG as the production asset for a 16×20. That is how soft prints start.

How to prep files without a design team

Pin a focal point, add every SKU as a custom ratio, export JPG/PNG/WebP at 300 DPI from Studio. Match Printful, Gooten, or a local shop after you read their template.

Titles, tags, and photos that match the file

Etsy SEO for prints still starts with a true title: size, medium, and subject. Do not title a listing “300 DPI ultra HD 8x10 12x18 16x20 18x24” if you only generated an 8×10. Searchers bounce, and the production folder will not match the variation they picked.

Listing photos should show the crop you will ship. If 16×20 chops more sky than 12×18, the mockups should show that. One lifestyle photo plus a flat file photo of the actual aspect ratio reduces “not as pictured” cases more than another keyword in the tags.

Policies shops get wrong

Personalization that asks the buyer to “send a photo” without stating a minimum pixel size is how you inherit a 900-pixel WhatsApp image. Publish a minimum: short side after crop must be listing-inches × 300. Offer a smaller SKU when they cannot meet it, instead of upscaling and hoping.

Digital + physical in one listing is allowed on Etsy but messy for files. Keep production rasters out of the digital download zip if that zip is meant for the customer’s home printer at a smaller inch limit. Label both.

If you use a print partner’s Etsy app, upload the production file in their dashboard, not only as an Etsy listing image. The app sends what you stored on their SKU. A beautiful Etsy photo at 2000 pixels will still print soft if the connected POD file was never replaced.

FAQ: Etsy print file requirements

What DPI does Etsy require for prints?+

Etsy does not print. Your print partner almost always wants 300 DPI for paper. Listing images have separate size guidelines and are not production files.

What is the best file type for Etsy print-on-demand?+

JPG at high quality for photos, PNG for text-heavy graphics, unless the POD template says otherwise. See [JPG vs PNG vs WebP](/blog/jpg-vs-png-vs-webp-print-on-demand).

Do I need bleed on Etsy prints?+

Only if the partner’s template includes bleed. Many poster SKUs are trim-size exact. Framed canvas SKUs often need extra wrap area.

Can I use the same file for every size in an Etsy variation?+

Only if every variation is the same aspect ratio and you have enough pixels for the largest size. 12×18 and 16×20 need different crops.
