Custom Aspect Ratios for Print Artists (11x14, 5x7, and Odd Sizes)
Preset 4:5 tools skip 11×14 and 5×7. Custom width × height at 300 DPI is how odd frames actually get filled without stretching Instagram ratios.

Custom aspect ratios mean you enter the real frame size (11×14, 5×7, 10×10, 12×36) instead of forcing a 4:5 or 2:3 preset. Pixel size is width × 300 by height × 300 at 300 DPI. 11×14 is 3300×4200 pixels. 5×7 is 1500×2100. Those ratios are not 4:5 or 2:3, so preset crop tools will cut the wrong edges.
Marketplace crop apps copy social ratios because that is what phone photos use. Print artists sell frames from Target, IKEA, and custom moulding shops. 11×14 is everywhere in North America. 50×70 cm is everywhere in Europe. Neither is 4:5.
If your tool only offers 1:1, 4:5, and 9:16, you will ship the wrong crop and call it “close enough.” Buyers with a $40 frame notice.
Presets miss real frames
11×14 is not 4:5 (that would be 11.2×14 if you force it, which you should not). 5×7 is not 2:3. Panoramas and square tiles are worse. If the tool only offers Instagram ratios, you will ship the wrong crop.

How to think in ratios without a calculator
Divide long side by short side. 14÷11 ≈ 1.27. 10÷8 = 1.25 (4:5). Close, not equal — on an 11×14 that 0.02 is extra inches of wall or a chopped chin. Always crop to the real pair of numbers.
Keep a focal point so 5×7 and 11×14 still show the same subject. Then batch export every SKU you actually sell — not every SKU a competitor lists.
Metric frames and mixed shops
A shop that sells 8×10 to the US and 50×70 cm to the EU needs both in the ratio list. Centimetres × 300 ÷ 2.54 gives pixels, or enter cm directly in Reopic and let it convert.
A4 is millimetres. 11×14 is inches. Mixing units in your head is how 297 mm becomes 297 inches in a broken export. Pick the unit on the listing.

11×14 and 5×7 in practice
11×14 is the US frame that sits next to 8×10 on the shelf and is not the same crop. From a 4:5 painting you lose a little of the long sides. From a 2:3 poster you lose more. Always preview 11×14 before you add it as a variation on a 12×18 hero image.
5×7 is a gift SKU. At 1500×2100 it is the most forgiving on megapixels and the least forgiving on composition — there is not much room around a face. Pin the eyes. If 5×7 chops a signature, either move the signature in the original art or do not offer 5×7 for that piece.
Squares, panoramas, and “close enough”
10×10 and 12×12 are 1:1. Forcing a 4:5 portrait into a square takes hair or chin. That can be a good crop for a face-centric piece and a bad crop for a full-figure painting. Do not auto-generate squares for every listing.
Panoramas (12×36, 10×30) need a wide original. You cannot manufacture width from a 4:3 phone photo without stretching or huge empty pads. If you did not shoot or paint wide, skip the panorama SKU. Focal-point cropping still helps on a true wide file so the interesting third stays in frame as you change heights.
Write the real size in the filename (11x14in, 50x70cm). When a VA uploads to Etsy, “final_crop_3.jpg” is how 5×7 files land in 11×14 SKUs. Custom ratios only help if the export is labeled with the inches you typed.
