Start with one ratio you can print sharply at 300 DPI — often 8×10 (4:5) in the US or A4 in Europe — then add sizes in the same family (16×20 with 8×10, 12×18 with 16×24) instead of every dropdown option. Check leftover pixels after crop: inches × 300. Skip sizes that chop the subject or that you cannot pack profitably.

New shops copy a competitor’s variation list: 5×7, 8×10, 11×14, 12×16, 12×18, 16×20, 18×24, 20×30, A4, A3. Then they upload one JPEG. That is how every size is slightly wrong.

Size is a product decision. Pixels, frames, shipping, and composition all vote. Pixels should win veto power.

Pick a ratio family, not a random menu

4:5 family: 8×10, 16×20. 2:3 family: 12×18, 16×24, 20×30. 3:4 family: 12×16, 18×24. 11:14 stands alone. ISO A: A4, A3. 12×18 vs 16×20 is the classic mix-up.

If the photo is 2:3, hero 12×18 and maybe 16×24. Offer 8×10 only if a 4:5 crop still looks like the painting. If the photo is boxy still life, hero 8×10 / 16×20 and skip 12×18.

After a focal-point crop, short side ÷ 300 is the max sharp inches. A 3000-pixel crop is 10 inches, not 20. Resize without losing quality means downscale, not invent.

Frames, shipping, and price

8×10 and 11×14 frames are cheap in US big-box stores. 12×18 reads as a poster tube. 16×20 often needs a box. Your $24 print cannot absorb $18 packaging on every order.
